Tree Stump Chalkboard

Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 1-Tree-Stump-Chalkboard

Supplies:

* Tree Stump (i called it a tree ring in the graphic below — I got mine at Michaels)
* Gold Foil Paint Pen
* Martha Stewart Mint Green chalkboard paint
* brushes

Using the chalkboard paint, I selected a tree ring and used it as my paint border with two or three coats.  I went in roughly 1-2″ from the edge of the stump.  I also gave the raw wood edge a very light white wash.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 3-Tree-Stump-Chalkboard

After the paint had dried, I got out my gold foil paint pen and went to town.  I painted the bark tops.  I attempted to use it the paint pen on the side bark portion, but no go.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 4-Tree-Stump-Chalkboard

I found an easy fix.  I turned the tree stump over (so as to not paint the chalkboard portion) and spray painted the edge with gold

Then it was a simple as hammering in a few picture hanging items (what are those even called?  I have no clue.)

Post by Alina 11th December 2014, 8:01 am

Yesterday I wanted to do my own bath bombs so I bought all the ingredients I needed and I made them. This is the result:

Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 IMG_20141210_121002_zpsdc8f12b8Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 IMG_20141210_120939_zps720c4c5a

The ingredients I used:

- baking soda - 2 cups
- acid citric - 1 cup
- fragrance oil (I had only apple so I used that) - 10 drops
- food coloring - 5 drops
- coconut oil (who I just realized it might be the one who I am allergic to so I might not be able to use them...) - 2 spoons
- water - around 2 spoons

you mix them very well and put them into the mold, leave them 24 hours to dry and it's done Very Happy

DIY: Hanging “Succulent Garden” Made With Pistachio Shells

To make the flowers, start with three shells and glue them together with your hot glue gun like this…
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-1
Now you’re going to start adding shells and building out by gluing shells directly to that.  Just add hot glue around the bottom edge of the shell as shown here.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-2
And then glue them to the first piece you made.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-3
And basically, you just keep adding and building outward until you have a flower that is the size you want it.  So you’re not gluing the shells to a base of any kind.  You’re gluing the shells to each other.
After making several flowers, I finally realized that it was easier to make the middle section, and then add a dot of glue to the bottom and attach it to a piece of wax paper.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-4
Then build the flower by turning the wax paper.  This keeps your work surface clear of any hot glue drips, and keeps your flower from sticking to your work surface.  When the flower is complete, just rip off the wax paper from the bottom.
Your finished flower will look something like this…
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-5
Make as many as you need to fill up your “canvas”.  I just used a piece of 1/4″ plywood for my “canvas”, and mine ended up being about 15″ x 17″.  Of course, it takes FOREVER to make that many flowers, so just be aware of that.  This is a good project to spread out over a few days, and just make a couple of flowers each night while you watch your favorite show on t.v.  I like to call these projects “Netflix Projects”.  Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Icon_smile
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-6
When all of your flowers are made and the glue is completely cooled, the flowers are ready for their dye bath.  I used powdered Rit fabric dye in four different colors, and I left the flowers in at varying lengths of time.  Obviously, the longer you leave them in, the more saturated the color.  I did have a couple of shells detach during their bath, but that didn’t happen much.  My flowers stayed pretty well intact during their dye bath.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-7
My flowers that are very light in color were left in about 30 seconds, and then turned upside down on paper towels for about 20 seconds, and then turned over (right side up) and misted with a spray bottle filled with water.  The ones that are more saturated were left in the dye bath for about three to five minutes, and then placed upside down on a paper towel for the excess to drip off, but I didn’t mist those with water since I didn’t want the color to get diluted.
You can see the difference in this picture below.  The flower on the top row on the right is dyed with the same teal dye as the flower on the bottom row second from the right.  The difference was the amount of time, and the water misting that the light one got after its dye bath.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-8
With all of your flowers finished, prepare your “canvas” by gluing the backing of your choice.  I used this light brown moss stuff that I got from Michael’s.  Be sure to leave the edges free since those will fit into your frame.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-9
Now go ahead and put the frame on (I just made a very simple frame from moulding I found at Home Depot, and then stained it with Minwax Dark Walnut stain), and begin arranging your flowers.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Pistachio-shell-flowers-10
As you do this, you might find that there are holes that need to be filled.  I ended up having to make four additional small flowers (in the top left corner) to fill empty space.

Easter

I started off with a bag of tiny Easter eggs from Hobby Lobby for $.67 each, and there were about 25 in a bag.
I picked out a few old books with varying degrees of page yellowness, tore out some pages, cut the length a little longer than my eggs, and the width just long enough to wrap all the way around the egg. I used Mod Podge to glue the paper around the eggs and then set them aside to dry for 5 minutes or so. (I learned the hard way, that if you try to glue the paper on the whole egg all at once, the egg slides around in the paper and you get air bubbles. Don’t do this, you will become annoyed very quickly.) I had a little assembly line going with my eggs, which was a good way to give the eggs a little time to dry in between the steps, and helped me not to waste any of those precious naptime minutes.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 2010_02_28_6905_thumb1
Once the middle section was dry and could be a sturdy base, I cut slits on each end of the paper, and pushed them down so that one side of the egg was exposed.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 2010_02_28_6863_thumb1
Make sure that when you are pushing down the slits, that you peel them down just a bit further, ripping the paper a little. This ensures that they will lie flat when you are smoothing them down against the egg, and there won’t be any air pockets.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 2010_02_28_6884_thumb1
Otherwise it will look like this in the end. Not so pretty.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 2010_02_28_6900_thumb1
Once the paper is pushed down, smear the top of the egg with a good bit of Mod Podge. I used the Matte finish, so it didn’t matter if it got all over the top of the paper. Use your thumb to push down a few of the pieces at a time, smoothing them so that they lay flat and overlap a little.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 2010_02_28_6910_thumb1
Top with more Mod Podge, and smooth down the next few strips, working your way around the egg.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 2010_02_28_6911_thumb1
You will end up with a nice little overlap, and if you’ve been smoothing it out with your thumb as you go it will look great!
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 2010_02_28_6847_thumb2
And there you have it!! Make enough to sprinkle them around your home. They're neutral enough to go with any type of decor and add a bit of fun whimsy to your Easter decorations!

Spring Baby Grass Wreath

....You will need a foam wreath form (I used an 8" green foam wreath), yarn (I used one skein of Lion Brand Yarn Fun Fur in Lime Green, article #320-194), a daisy trim (I used Wright's trim, but you could use any you like), and long pearlized pink pins (1 1/2").
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e201310f9df288970c-550wi
Start by wrapping the yarn around the wreath and tying a knot to secure the end. Then start wrapping...
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e201310f9df945970c-550wi
...and wrapping.... I kept the strands very close together, pushing them closer if needed...just work at a table and pass the skein of yarn through the center of the wreath with each wrap around..... keep wrapping....
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e201310f9df9a4970c-550wi
...and wrapping.... Look! We're growing baby grass!!!..... keep wrapping....
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e20120a9377064970b-550wi
...we're getting there!.... keep wrapping... almost done......
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e201310f9dfb57970c-550wi
....yea!!!!!! we have a baby grass wreath! So cute!
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e20120a9377405970b-550wi
Now to add a few spring daisies sprouting up in the baby grass. Cut the daisy trim apart between the flowers.....
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e20120a9377581970b-550wi
Push a pink pearlized pin through the center of the daisy.....
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e201310f9e0012970c-550wi
And insert the daisy pin into the foam wreath....
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e201310f9e00ff970c-550wi
Grow as many daisies in your baby grass as you would like.....
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 6a00d83451dea169e201310f9e0193970c-550wi
It would look beautiful just sitting on a table as is.
I added a wide pink satin ribbon to mine to hang it, and then a cute little sign that says 'bare feet welcome'......

There you go ~ very simple to make and so darn cute! Enjoy your Spring baby grass wreath! :-)

DIY Flower Easter Eggs

Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 EASTER-EGG-TREE-e1300661903709
Easter is right around the corner so it’s time to start sharing some creative and crafty ideas for the season! First up is this “DIY EASTER EGG” idea inspired by one of our most popular posts, a feature of Frog Prince Paperie’s DIY Pomander Flower Ball made the same way! Paula of Frog Prince Paperie is a crafty one for sure! I was so inspired by the pomander flower ball that I tried it on Easter eggs!
Read on for the steps (they’re so easy!) + find out when we’re hosting our biggest giveaway yet!
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Easter-egg-how-to-make-2-e1300660928268

What you will need:

- Styrofoam Eggs (craft store such as Michaels)
- pearl push pins (sewing aisle of craft store)
- mini flowers (purchased at craft store or use a flower punch)
- ribbon to hang egg (optional)
- hot glue gun
- mini easter tree (optional)
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Easter-egg-how-to-make-3-e1300660986120
These little floral easter eggs are SO EASY to make! Seriously, you could make a dozen while watching your favorite television show and bam, you have a whole tree’s worth!
Step 1: Pour out your mini flowers (or punch them out of craft paper).
Step 2: Using push pins (I like the ones with pearlized colored tops), push flower into sytrofoam egg
Step 3: Continue adding flowers (overlapping a bit so the styrofoam does not show through) until egg covered.
Step 4: Using a hot glue gun, attach a loop of ribbon to hang from tree. Or you can fill a small basket or vase with the eggs.
Step 5: Enjoy!

Etceteras: springtime baby carrots

Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Yarn+Carrots+1
With spring just around the corner, it’s time to get busy. Spring wreaths, centerpieces and baskets need to be dusted off or freshly made.  This year, I’m adding a new look to my decorations with these baby carrots.

Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Yarn+Carrots+4
I’m making lots of these to add to Easter baskets, wreaths and table décor.
Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Yarn+Carrots+2
I made these carrots using cardstock shaped into a narrow cone. I brushed on tacky glue and then wrapped orange yarn around the cardstock. With green yarn, I made a small tassel and glued it to the end of the carrot.

Creative ideas for your home - Page 2 Yarn+Carrots+3
I think these will look nice embellishing the rim of an Easter basket or on top of a gift box.  Happy almost spring!
